It takes me all of Saturday and Sunday to fit the new cameras and work out the apps that go with them. By Monday morning, Iâm groggy with a hangover. These days, I need to drink red wine to help me sleep. Itâs the only thing that works.
âAre you all right?â Nathan asks. For once, he seems genuinely concerned.
âDo I look that bad?â I donât need him to answer thatâI already know I look terrible.
He shakes his head, but his eyes have trouble meeting mine. I can see he feels guilty about all this. Weâre in the conference room. Heâs paranoid about us being alone in his office together, and to be honest, I get it. I donât want to do anything extra that could potentially raise questions about us, especially since Iâm still suspicious about everyone in this office anyway.
The shades are drawn, but Nathan is still handsome under the subdued lighting. His arm rests on the surface of the table, his fingers laced together. His expression remains somewhat pained.
âDid you give your statement to the police?â I ask.
He nods. âThis morning. Over the phone.â
I sigh. I can tell from Nathanâs demeanor that Briggs and Calypso havenât contacted Angela yet. Itâs only a matter of time before they do, and now I need to break the bad news. âIâm sorry about all this, Nathan.â
His eyes reach mine. âYou donât have anything to be sorry about, Lucy.â
I see someone walk by the door, so I pretend to be inspecting a document that Iâve brought in here. The papers are just for show, to make it appear as though weâre working on something. We donât know where to go to talk alone. It seems like nowhere is private anymore. Not even my own house.
âI have some bad news to break to you,â I say. âThe police⦠theyâre going to want to speak to Angela. Someone stole the bracelet from my wrist and delivered it back to me in a gift box.â
âWhat?â
âYeah. Itâs messed up. But the thing is⦠I sat next to Angela all night andââ
âIt wasnât her,â he snaps.
I lift a palm to calm him. âIâm not saying she did it. Iâm saying that sheâs a suspect because of us sitting together.â
He rakes his fingers through his hair. âSo this is it. This is the end of my marriage.â
âIâm sorry.â
âStop saying that,â he chides.
âOkay, I will. To be honest, Nathan, she knows anyway. She spent the whole night talking about you and whether youâre having an affair. She even asked me to be her eyes and ears in the office. It was awful. I didnât know what to say.â
âShe did?â His eyes widen. âGod. I had no idea.â
âThen Janine got drunk and flirted with you, which didnât help matters.â
âSo she thinks Iâm screwing Janine?â He laughs. âYou canât make this up.â
âI wish weâd made this up.â I rub my upper arms, thinking about the doorbell video. I showed it to Nathan this morning. It has been a wakeup call for me.
